With more than twenty five years in the business, Michael Dowling brings his level of expertise to developing riders. A professor of Equine Studies at Centenary College, Michael also coaches its nationally ranked IHSA team which has consistently placed at the top of the IHSA standings, having won the national title three times in the last six years.
Following his undergraduate studies at Fairfield University in Connecticut and graduate studies at the University of Lancaster in Lancashire, England, Michael opened Windham Hill, a training facility in northwest New Jersey where the main focus was on training and preparing horses and riders for the show ring. He continues to operate Windham Hill where emphasis is placed on horsemanship and developing thinking riders.
Michael’s success is attributed to the forward riding system. Through a systematic approach in teaching and training, we incorporate flatwork and gymnastic work to develop and hone our riders’ skills. This system has assisted Michael in qualifying riders for the ASPCA Maclay Finals, Pessoa Medal Finals, USET Finals, Young Riders, Junior Hunter Finals, USEF Pony Finals and Indoors, many of whom have placed or won at these and other prestigious shows.
Michael is active in all aspects of the industry including horse show management, judging and course design. He is also a member of the hunter/jumper committee of the Gladstone Equestrian Association, a not-for-profit corporation organized more than 30 years ago to promote equestrian clinics and competitions in the Gladstone, New Jersey area.
Michael joined Windham Hill in 2013, as a young professional Michael works with the young horses and students to give them a solid foundation.
As a junior, Michael spent most of his years as a working student for Jeffrey Ayers, where he learned proper flatwork and how to prepare horses for the show ring. As Michael went onto his professional career, he started to work with Sandy Ferrell and Robert Cole.
In his years at Windham Hill, he has helped riders and their horses qualify for ASPCA Maclay Finals, Pessoa Medal Finals, Zone Finals, USEF Pony Finals, and Junior Hunter Finals.
Michael enjoys seeing sale graduates go on to be great horses and knowing that he gave them a solid foundation.
